Here’s what coming up at CCC!

Top 5 reasons to come to the adult study on Sunday at 10 AM
1. Breakfast. You know you want some!
2. It’s like college, only cheaper. The teaching portion of this class is from a college lecture, so it’ll be like college!
3. But you also get to talk! We’ll welcome feedback to the sermon from last week. (But you need to be on time, we’ll do this first thing)
4. When is the last time you sat down and really thought about God and war?
5. How many people died in wars in the last century? Do you know? And does that matter to God?

This Sunday February :
• 10 AM Adult Sunday School: Theology of War. In this class we’ll look at the different interpretations and different Biblical perspectives in which Christians (and others) have understood violent conflict.
• 11 AM Worship: Shalom On Earth: Inner Personal Peace & Inter-Personal Peace. Each week we’ll look at a different aspect of Shalom, Biblical peace. To prepare, read Romans 12:14-21, and Philippians 4:4-7. (This was the sermon Jeremy was going to preach on 1/22 before he got sick).
• After worship: Congregational meeting to affirm the new Leadership Team. The current Leadership Team began its two-year term in March 2009. We’ll also affirm a minor change to our bylaws.

Get this book: From February 26 - April 1, adult Sunday School will be reading parts of the book “Devotional Classics” by Foster & Smith, eds. This amazing book is a collection of some of the best Christian devotional writing in the last 2000 years, and is broken down into very short and easy-to-read chapters. Get the book now, you can find used copies on Amazon.com for under $10. The church will try to get a hold of some used copies in the coming weeks as well.

February schedule:
• Sunday February 12:
o 10 AM Adult Sunday School: “What Love Isn’t.” 1 Corinthians 13. We’ll talk about the role of romance in our culture, and how that is different from or similar to Biblical love.
o 11 AM Worship: “What Love Isn’t.” 1 Corinthians 13
o Hike after worship! Tiger Mountain Trail South to Artifact Trail (we’ve done this one before). A very achievable hike with little elevation gain, the trailhead is a mere 15 minutes (!) from CCC, hike is approximately 7.5 miles (roundtrip), no vistas, great old forests, we’ll turnaround at Artifact Trail (on Middle Tiger). Artifact Trail is not listed on many maps and guidebooks, and was the site of a fatal train wreck in 1925. It is a beautiful wooded area known for half-buried, rusty train wreckage. For a shorter hike, there is a lovely turnaround point at a quiet creek (4 miles roundtrip). Do: be able-bodied, bring water, wear sensible shoes, eat lunch before you go, expect moderately inclement weather (water and some mud). Slow hikers should carpool with slow hikers, fast hikers carpool with fast hikers. We do not have a firm end time, we’ll be done when we’re done. Kids are welcome, but we will not take children on this hike unless they are accompanied by an adult guardian. The Tiger Mountain South trailhead is obscure: take 18 E to Issaquah-Hobart Road SE, go towards Issaquah, and soon turn right on Tiger Mountain Rd SE. A short distance up the road you should park in the first wide spot you can find. The trail begins to the right. Questions? See Pastor Jeremy!
• Sat February 18: Work & Craft Day, 10-2. Craft projects in the basement, and fixer-upper projects around the church. Come when you can, leave when you must, and bring your own lunch!
• Sunday February 19:
o 10 AM Adult Sunday School: Like the sermon, we’ll be focused on the book of Philemon. We’ll also talk the relationship between Christianity and slavery.
o 11 AM Worship: “The Useless Slave.” A sermon & bible study on the book of Philemon (yes, the whole book!)
• February 26: New adult Sunday School & Sermon series for the season of Lent coming!

Two reports! First, the 14-page Common Meal report. This is a great collection of feedback from the congregation, and will inform our direction for 2012. Second, the financial report from 2011 (pie charts!) that shows where our money came from and went to. Both are available in the church literature rack!

Let’s Talk Connections! In our Common Meals and surveys last year, the #1 request of the congregation was that we do more “ministries of connection.” Most people have been at CCC less than 2 years, so this means following up with visitors & newcomers, and helping all of us connect socially and relationally to others in the church. This spring we hope to put together a team of people who will take on this ministry, but for now we want to hear from you: Do you already send cards or notes to newcomers? Do you invite others to lunch? How are you making connections now with others at CCC? Would you like to be part of a group who faithfully and intentionally shared this ministry? (FYI: While we are happy to hear from everyone, we aren’t primarily looking for people who “think we ought to do this.” The surveys showed that we very much ought to do this! We’re looking more for people who are already doing this, or people who want to help make something happen). Just email Jeremy (Jeremy@CovingtonCommunitychurch.org).
